Resolutions for 2009

>> Thursday, January 1, 2009

1. Make a use for my new Wii Fit and lose about 15-20lbs.

2. Make time for my husband and I and our "alone" time. We went on a total of five dates last year. I would like to have at least one date a month.

3. Stop letting people take advantage of me until I just blow up at the last straw. I'm going to try to learn to say NO in the first place.

4. Learn more about Autism and volunteer with special needs kids.

5. I started this process last year, and I'm going to stick to it. Instead of feeling sorry for all of those dramatic crazy folks, I'm cutting them out. Don't have the time or energy for crazy!

6. Visit my grandparents more than what I do.

7. Work on my temper and my lack of patience, especially with stupid people.

8. Laundry- I'm great about washing and drying clothes, just not great about putting them up. I know, it's awful!!

9. Take a photography class. I know that I have advanced more now than what I did when I first started out, but I'm still not where I want to be and have more to learn. I don't believe that one person can ever stop learning about ANY subject.

10. Quit worrying about what other people think of me. The people that matter are happy and that's what counts. Screw what everybody else thinks.

11. Travel more with the boys. I want the boys to see more of the world and what's out there. It's hard to travel with T places, but if we get him prepared enough we can make the trip.

12. Buy some lotto tickets

13. Make it up to Mt. Magazine again sometime soon.

14. Keep our bedroom more organized.

15. Let those dear to me know how much I appreciate them and love them and let them know more often.

16. Learn more than just two White Stripes songs on the drums.

Rest in Peace, Bettie Page

>> Friday, December 12, 2008

I always looked up to her because she paved the way for "curvy" models and basically made ordinary people feel sexy instead of feeling fat for being curvy. And she was a a badass.

Bettie Page, the 1950s secretary-turned-model whose controversial photographs in skimpy attire or none at all helped set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85.

Page was placed on life support last week after suffering a heart attack in Los Angeles and never regained consciousness, said her agent, Mark Roesler. He said he and Page's family agreed to remove life support. Before the heart attack, Page had been hospitalized for three weeks with pneumonia.

"She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality," Roesler said. "She is the embodiment of beauty."

Page, who was also known as Betty, attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure in bikinis and see-through lingerie that were quickly tacked up on walls in military barracks, garages and elsewhere, where they remained for years.

Her photos included a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of then-fledgling Playboy magazine, as well as controversial sadomasochistic poses.

Schools, IEP's, and What parents may not know

>> Wednesday, December 10, 2008

If you are a parent of a special needs child, read this. We had so many ongoing battles with our child's school, it was unreal. I just wanted to pass this information on to make someone else's journey a little bit more bearable.

First of all, if you do not have an advocate for your child who is on and IEP, please get one ASAP! As I have stated so many times before, you would be blown away by what the schools CAN actually do and how much IEP funding they are receiving PER CHILD. I know because I have been there! I have been to meetings and we sit and pull straws as to what to do until the very obvious feeling that the school is giving up on your child overwhelms you. If I only knew then what I know now, my son would not have fell behind! When the district acts as if they have the child's best interest at heart, yet are doing nothing to accommodate to their Individualized Education Plan, what is that saying about the district? It's all about money, this is true.... But these schools are funded through the government based on the disability, severity of the child. The school administration does not want parents to know this either! Trust me on this. It's not the teachers, it's the administrative, the "business" end of the school. Your teachers are in a catch 22 so to speak.. They know what's best, yet they cannot put their jobs on the line. The information that I have been told by not one but several teachers and school staff over the years, all in "secret" would blow your mind away. Finding my own advocate was the best thing I ever did. I have actually had a principal try to silence me for giving this information to another parent in the school only weeks ago. As I touched base with my own advocate, I was informed that I was very correct and she was 1. mislead or 2. shutting me down. If you wish to know the exact amount a school district is receiving for your child and a generalized view of where it's being spent on your child, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW THIS! You can get it through the department of education! It's your right to know and no school will tell you this.

My advice? Stay focused, keep mental and written notes of everything, never let the school put anything back on you! It's THEIR responsibility to educate your child!! That is your child's legal and entitled right, to receive a proper education! Do work with them, but use common sense within reason. Know your rights and the rights of your child. If you feel the walls closing in, call a meeting. Bring your advocate to the meeting, not an advocate appointed through the school district either.. They work for the schools best interest, not your child's. So make sure your advocate is a good one and from an outside source.
I can help you find an advocate in your area or you can contact www. autism-society. org to get in contact with the Autism society in your area, who will assign an advocate to you.

Sometimes we as parents need a backup of force to make things happen for our kids. You are your child's biggest advocate! No one will fight for your child harder than his or her own parents! I have read some true horror stories from some of you about some schools. First, get an advocate then in the most extreme rare cases, if need be get an attorney who specializes in special education and IEP laws. Don't wait until you start having trouble, bring them in when all things are "good". You deserve that back up.

One other thing, if your child is on and IEP and you transport your child to school, something many parents do not know is the school district must pay you for your travel to and from school for every day your child attends.

Anything your school puts on YOU that pertains to the child's education and is based in the IEP, they MUST reimburse you so keep your receipts. And do know that by law, you do not have to cater to the school when they are requiring something of cost. When something is worked into a child's IEP plan, it's the schools responsibility to pay for it. Of course they would like to push it off on you.... But they owe you if they do.

When the school becomes to desperate it shows. Because they become overly dependent on the parent to change any problems with that child. However, it's their responsibility to FIND SOMETHING that works, if that means restructuring the entire program designed for that child, then by law they have to. They have to find something that works or they must hand over funds to other sources of education that can help. If you don't have an advocate, they will convince you otherwise. The goal is not to trash schools, some of these districts are Excellent districts for the typical child, so it's not about degrading schools. It's about making them do what they are required to do by law and the facts are schools are ran like a business, if money is involved they will become greedy. Your child on an IEP is bringing a nice chuck of cash to that district, so they need to use it for YOUR child.

Twilight Movie Goofs

>> Wednesday, December 3, 2008

If you are going back to see the movie again, look for these goofs. I honestly didn't pick up on any except Jasper's accent.

IMDB.com has updated the Twilight movie page with some new "goofs" and trivia from the movie!

Goofs:

• Miscellaneous: In the scene with Edward and Bella talking in the cafeteria (when she drops the apple and he catches it) it is apparent that he has pit stains. Vampires don't sweat, or omit any other kind of bodily fluids.

• Errors in geography: As Edward is driving away from the street thugs, you can see his car clearly has Oregon license plates. If you miss the name, Washington state standard plates have Mt. Rainier on them, while Oregon standard plates have an evergreen tree in the middle.

• Continuity: When Edward is up in the tree looking down at Bella, the distance his body is from hers changes between shots. In the close-up shot, his face is almost right in front of hers (below the branches), but from the normal shot, he's holding himself much higher up (above the branches).

• Plot holes: Throughout the movie you can see the vampire's breath. This should not be able to happen as they are so cold.

• Continuity: When playing baseball and Victoria states that she has a mean curve-ball and Jasper replies, he has a slight Southern drawl, which makes sense because Jasper is from the South during the Civil War time period, but later on this accent has disappeared.

• Crew or equipment visible: Kristen Stewart's mike was clearly visible between the hem of her shirt and the waist of her pants when Charlie takes Bella to her bedroom in the beginning.

Twilight-better late than never

>> Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Ok, so has read the book and watched the movie? Who just watched the movie?
Let me know your thoughts.
If I had never read the book, I think I would have liked the movie a lot better. Considering the budget that they were on, it wasn't bad. However, my poor husband had to reap the benefits of me bitching through the whole movie that things just didn't happen that way. I know that most movies shy away from the book and I went into the movie reminding myself of that. They did stick to the whole storyline pretty good and I will give them that.
I just didn't care for the end of the movie when Jacob comes walking out of nowhere. That's not how it happened in the book, he danced with her. They did skip out the "blood typing" scene in biology and the explanation of things while they were in Carlisle's office. The Cullen's house was all wrong to me.
I am excited that New Moon is already in production and hope that with all of the money that they made off of Twilight, New Moon will be better.
